Our chapter includes students with excellent scholarship and community service values. Monthly meetings occur the first Tuesday of each month in the library. Students are expected to attend every meeting and participate in each service project.

Bylaws to the Constitution of

National Honor Society

McAdory High School Chapter


Rules established by the Chapter that do not have to be approved by the National Secretary.


ARTICLE ONE:  Membership

Section One.  The National Honor Society (NHS) is an important organization that promotes recognition for students who reflect outstanding accomplishments in the areas of academics, character, leadership, and service.  Members of the NHS are obligated to serve one another and the community with behavior that is honorable, responsible, and generous to others.  The members have the opportunity to share their talents with other students, their school, and their community.

Section Two.  Membership is open to sophomores, juniors and seniors who have attended the school for the equivalent of one school year and who have a cumulative GPA of 3.75/4.00.  Students who meet this scholastic requirement are then eligible for consideration on the basis of leadership, service, and character.  The MHS Faculty Council, selected by the Principal, surveys the eligible students by obtaining information regarding service and leadership activities.  The survey of this information is not an application for membership.  Review of survey information does not guarantee that a student will be selected as a NHS candidate. The Faculty Council has the responsibility to develop working definitions of these criteria which they will use to determine candidates for membership.  All decisions made by the Faculty Council are made with the good faith expected of them.  Members of the Faculty Council shall support the school leader in creating and sustaining a school environment in accordance with the NHS Bylaws.

Section Three.  NHS candidates become members when inducted at a special ceremony. 

Section Four.  A NHS member who transfers to another school and brings a letter from the Principal or Chapter Adviser to the new school adviser shall be accepted automatically as a member in the new school’s chapter.  Transfer members must meet the new chapter’s standards within one semester in order to retain membership. 

Section Five.  Members who resign or are dismissed are never again eligible for membership or its benefits.   

Section Six.  Once a member, all members must maintain a GPA of 3.50/4.00 through their high school years.  If the cumulative GPA is below the 3.50/4.00, the Faculty Adviser will send a warning letter and place the member on probation.  If the student’s cumulative GPA is not brought up by the end of the next term, the Faculty Council will dismiss the member from NHS. 


ARTICLE TWO: Dues and Fees


Section One.  The NHS is a not for profit organization. 

Section Two-Dues:  The junior annual dues are $5.  The senior annual dues are $30.00.  Annual dues will not be accepted after the September meeting.  These dues are used for chapter membership, awards and recognition. 

Section Three-Induction Fees:   Induction fee for sophomores and juniors is $15.00. This $15 induction fee covers certificate, pin, candle, and the induction ceremony.  Induction fee for seniors is $40.00.  This $40 induction fee covers certificate, pin, candle, graduation stole, and the induction ceremony. 

Section Four: The NHS members voted to no longer utilize fundraisers to purchase graduation stoles.  (Amended September 2014)




Section One.  The McAdory High School NHS will meet monthly. 

Section Two.  NHS requires that members must attend ALL meetings. 

Section Three.  The Faculty Adviser will send a warning letter to members who have missed two meetings.  If a member misses three meetings, the Faculty Council will dismiss the member from NHS.





Section One.  Each Member must complete three group service projects for the school year.  These projects include:  Children’s Hospital Santa’s Workshop (Nov), Can Food Drive (Jan), and Relay for Life Cancer Walk (Apr). 

Section Two.  If a member does not participate in one of the group projects, that individual member may complete an independent project in place of the missed group project.  This requires a written note or email which must be turned into the Faculty Adviser. The Faculty Adviser must approve all individual projects.  Once the individual project is completed the member must submit a signed document written by the person (cannot be a family member) who can verify the completion the member’s individual service project.    

Section Three.  The Faculty Adviser will send a warning letter to members who have missed one project.  If the missed project is not completed, the Faculty Council will dismiss the member from NHS. 



ARTICLE FIVE:  Volunteer Hours


Section One.  Each member must complete five (5) volunteer service hours per semester, outside of the regular school day.  Members must submit a signed document written by the person (cannot be a family member) who can verify the completion of the member’s individual service hour(s). 

Section Two.  Volunteer hours must be submitted to the Faculty Adviser each semester. All fall semester hours must be submitted by the November meeting.  All spring semester hours must be submitted by the April meeting.

Section Three.  The Faculty Adviser will send a warning letter to members who have not completed their volunteer hours after the November and/or April meetings.  Missed volunteer hours must be completed one week prior to the end of each semester. If the missed hours are not completed, the Faculty Council will dismiss the member from NHS. 


ARTICLE SIX:  Discipline and Dismissal


Section One.  The Faculty Council, in compliance with the rules and regulations of the NHS, shall determine the procedure for dismissal.  A written description of the dismissal procedure shall be available to interested parties. 

Section Two.  Except in the case of the flagrant violation of school rules or the law, members who fall below the standards that were the basis for their selection shall be promptly warned in writing by the chapter adviser and given a reasonable amount of time to correct the deficiency. 

Section Three.  The Faculty Council shall determine when an individual has exceeded a reasonable number of warnings. 

Section Four.  In all cases of pending dismissal, a member shall have the right to write an appeal to the Faculty Council. 

Section Five.  For purposes of dismissal, a majority vote of the Faculty Council is required. 


ARTICLE SEVEN:  Faculty Council


Section One. The MHS Faculty Council will be appointed by the Principal.

Section Two. There will be a total of five members on the MHS Faculty Council.

New Member Requirements:

3.75 GPA or Higher

Clean Discipline Record (past and current)

Positive Character Faculty Evaluation

Attended McAdory HS the previous school year

New members are notified via a letter.  Students have a due date to return their letter of intent along with a $15 induction fee for Sophomores and Juniors or $40 for Seniors.
